Multivitamin Tablets in OEM: Mineral Compatibility, Colour and Hardness

In pressed candy contract manufacturing, multivitamin tablets are the request that comes up most often and the one most likely to run into trouble at commercial scale. The reason is straightforward. A single-ingredient tablet asks only that the compressibility and stability of one main material be understood, whereas a multivitamin tablet packs a dozen or more actives into one piece, and those actives interact. Alkaline minerals accelerate the degradation of certain vitamins, transition metal ions catalyse oxidation, and particle size and bulk density can differ two or three fold between raw materials, which makes hardness and disintegration hard to balance at the same time. Clients typically arrive with a formulation copied from a best-selling online product and ask whether it can be made. Usually it can, but only after trade-offs are made in raw material form and process route. This article sets out those trade-offs.

Multivitamin Tablets in OEM: Mineral Compatibility, Colour and Hardness

1. The mineral source sets the ceiling for the whole formula

The same mineral exists in several compound forms, and choosing the wrong one cannot be rescued by process adjustment later. Calcium is a good example. Calcium carbonate is high in calcium and cheap, but it is strongly alkaline and poorly soluble, so alongside vitamin C and the B group it tends to accelerate degradation, and on moisture uptake it can leave speckles on the tablet surface. Calcium citrate and calcium gluconate carry far less calcium, which means a larger tablet or more tablets per dose at the same label claim, but they are milder and compatible with sensitive vitamins. Magnesium, zinc and iron divide along similar lines: magnesium oxide is inexpensive but strongly alkaline, while magnesium citrate and magnesium glycinate are gentler; ferrous sulphate is cheap yet clearly damaging to vitamin E and oily components, whereas ferrous fumarate or chelated iron behave better. The order of decision should be compatibility with the vitamins present, then whether the target potency fits an acceptable tablet weight, and only then cost. Reversing that order usually means rework.

2. Colour drift and off-notes share one mechanism

When a multivitamin tablet develops pale spots, brown patches or an odd metallic note after a few months, it is almost never a microbiological problem; it is oxidation and metal catalysis. Iron, copper and manganese ions accelerate the oxidation of fats, pigments and certain vitamins once traces of moisture and light are present, producing coloured or odorous species, and vitamin C itself oxidises readily into coloured degradation products when metal ions are around. Three controls help. Separate incompatible components in space, for instance with a bilayer tablet or by placing sensitive actives in a coating layer. Drive water activity as low as possible, which means controlling workshop dew point and packaging barrier together. Use antioxidants and chelators as support, since citric acid, vitamin E and EDTA-type chelators all contribute, provided permitted addition levels are respected. Where the formula contains fish oil powder or botanical extracts, microencapsulation is the highest-value option.

3. Poor compressibility is the norm, not the exception

A high mineral load has two direct consequences: the powder flows badly and compresses badly. Poor flow makes fill depth inconsistent, which widens tablet weight variation; poor compression means hardness cannot be reached, and a coating pan will knock the edges off. The standard answer is granulation first. Wet granulation markedly improves flow and compressibility but is unfriendly to heat-sensitive and hydrolysis-prone actives, so dry granulation or direct-compression grade minerals with well-chosen fillers may be preferable. In the excipient system, microcrystalline cellulose supplies compressibility, while lactose or dibasic calcium phosphate provides bulk and flow, and a modest amount of disintegrant keeps disintegration time from being dragged out by the minerals. Lubricants deserve care: magnesium stearate costs hardness as its level rises, and multivitamin tablets have little hardness margin to spare, so a low level combined with a more hydrophilic lubricant is usually preferable.

4. Where overage stops being sound practice

Vitamins in a multivitamin tablet decline through shelf life, and if the label claim must hold until expiry, the factory has to overage. How much is a scientific question, not a matter of habit. Accelerated testing yields a degradation curve per nutrient, and the overage is worked back from the minimum acceptable content at end of shelf life, allowing for blend uniformity and analytical error. Two points are easily missed. First, decay is not linear; the initial rapid drop under high temperature and humidity often does not occur at ambient conditions, so extrapolating accelerated data linearly inflates overage, raises cost and can even breach upper addition limits. Second, raw material potency varies batch to batch, and a supplier certificate is only an indication, so incoming testing has to drive the actual charge weight.

5. Three process details that are chronically overlooked

The first is mixing sequence. Dumping everything into the blender at once is easiest, but trace micronutrients and bulk powders differ enough in particle size and density to segregate. Geometric dilution into a premix, followed by final blending with the bulk, and verification through content uniformity rather than a guessed mixing time, is the reliable route. The second is press parameter matching, where fill depth, pre-compression, main compression and turret speed must be adjusted together; raising speed for throughput degrades weight variation and friability simultaneously. The third is the underestimated role of coating. A film coat is not only about appearance and swallowability; it blocks moisture and oxygen and often makes a measurable contribution to potency retention, with coating weight gain, inlet air temperature and spray atomisation all requiring process validation.

6. Judging whether a factory can take on multivitamin tablets

A brand owner can assess four things. Look at the formulation library: are there mature frameworks for combined vitamin and mineral products, or is every project started from scratch? Look at laboratory capability, because in-house testing of vitamin content, content uniformity and disintegration time determines both development speed and commercial consistency. Look at stability data: long-term and accelerated results on comparable products are what justify an overage design. Look at process routes: granulation, coating and bilayer compression capability determine whether there is an answer when the formula contains incompatible partners. A factory that can evidence all four is a factory that can deliver multivitamin tablets.
