Hardness and Friability in Pressed Candy OEM: Limits, Binders and Force

Whether a tablet comes out hard enough and stops shedding dust looks like a minor detail, yet it decides how smoothly the product coats, bottles and ships. Hardness and friability are a matched pair: hardness measures resistance to crushing, friability measures how much a tablet chips and abrades when it rolls, rubs and takes light impacts. Many projects watch hardness alone during sampling and keep raising compression force; friability then looks excellent while disintegration slows and edges begin to cap. In pressed candy contract manufacturing, the better sequence is to fix the product positioning and pack format first, then derive an acceptable range for each parameter instead of applying one universal number. This article covers the relationship between the two, binder systems, the compression window, moisture, shipping damage and release limits.

Hardness and Friability in Pressed Candy OEM: Limits, Binders and Force

Hardness and friability are not the same thing

Hardness is read on a tablet hardness tester in newtons or kilograms-force, measuring the force needed to crush a tablet. Friability is read on a friabilator, where a set number of tablets tumble at a defined speed for a defined time and the weight loss is expressed as a percentage. The two are related but not equivalent. Harder tablets usually show lower friability, but beyond a certain point friability stops improving while disintegration keeps getting worse and edges become more prone to laminating. Set hardness as a two-sided range - a floor for transport integrity and a ceiling for disintegration and mouthfeel - and friability as an upper limit only. Positioning decides the trade-off: chewables can run softer, while tablets destined for pan coating need more surface strength or they dust away as soon as the pan turns.

Binders and granule strength

Granule strength is the foundation of tablet hardness. Common wet-granulation binders include hypromellose, povidone, pregelatinised starch and syrups. More binder means harder granules, harder tablets and lower friability, but noticeably slower disintegration. The choice depends on the main ingredient: free-flowing, well-compressible materials such as sugar alcohols need little binder, while poorly compressible powder extracts need more plus a denser granule. A factor that is often overlooked is how the binder is added - all in the granulation step, or partly as a dry addition - which changes granule strength entirely. Change one variable at a time and re-test hardness, friability and disintegration together, or the result cannot be interpreted.

Setting the compression window

Compression force is the most direct lever on hardness and the parameter most likely to be nudged on the line. Run it low and tablets are porous with high friability, shedding powder on the packaging line. Run it high and hardness rises and friability falls, but lower porosity slows disintegration, and residual stress inside the tablet can produce capping hours after compression. Every product should therefore have a compression window established by trial: the minimum force from the hardness floor and friability ceiling, the maximum from the disintegration limit, with routine production running in the middle of that band and the window written into the process specification. Re-confirm it whenever tooling changes, a new raw material lot arrives, or ambient humidity shifts; do not carry old settings over.

Moisture and drying

The influence of moisture on hardness is regularly underestimated. Tablets that are too wet are soft and friable and tend to stick to punches; tablets that are too dry are brittle, chip at the edges and develop static. The drying endpoint in wet granulation should be judged from granule moisture content rather than elapsed time - a moisture analyser reading combined with a hand check works well - and dried granules should be held sealed for a period before compression so moisture redistributes evenly through the granule. Ambient humidity also matters, because rainy-season and dry-winter settings are rarely interchangeable, a point that becomes obvious when customers in the north and south order at the same time.

Friability versus real shipping damage

Passing friability in the lab does not mean surviving a delivery. The tumbling action of the friabilator differs from the drops, compression and vibration of real logistics. For packaging validation, run drop and vibration tests on the actual pack and then measure powder and chipped corners on opening. When lab numbers look good but unboxing damage is high, cushioning is usually short or void space is too large: a bottle filled short lets tablets strike each other, which can be fixed with a base pad or a tighter fill, while blister packs need the forming depth checked against tablet thickness, since an over-deep pocket lets the tablet rattle.

Release limits and common mistakes

Set release limits in three layers: a hardness range, a friability ceiling and a disintegration ceiling, with defined sample numbers, testing frequency and instrument calibration intervals. Sample at start-up, at every lot change and at shift changes; when results drift, confirm force, fill depth and granule condition before touching the formula. Three mistakes recur: treating hardness as the only metric and crushing the product harder to stop dusting; loosening the test method - friabilator speed or run time - to fit the data; and changing formula and process at once, which makes attribution impossible. Control the variables and both parameters become routine.

Hardness and friability are not a contest to maximise. They have to match disintegration, mouthfeel and pack format. Build the compression window at sampling, lock granule moisture and ambient conditions in production, and validate with real packaging in transit; do all three and the tablet arrives intact and usable. For a contract manufacturing project, those records are also the most direct evidence in an audit.
